Do you ever dream of visiting paradise? Well, I’ll tell you where paradise is… Look no further, because Waikiki Beach is the paradise you have been waiting to visit.
About Waikiki Beach
Waikiki Beach was a retreat for Hawaiian royalty in the 1800s. The first hotels opened in the 1880s.
This amazing place called Waikiki Beach today has had erosion problems since the late-1800s, because hotels and homes were built too close to the natural shoreline, and so they had the need to build seawalls and other structures to block the flow of sand along the beach.
By the year 1950, more than 80 structures, including seawalls, groins, piers, and storm drains, occupied the Waikiki shoreline.
The area became filled with large resort hotels, such as the Hilton Hawaiian Village, Halekulani, the Hyatt Regency Waikiki, Marriott Waikiki, Sheraton Waikiki Hotel and historic hotels dating back to the early 20th century (such as the Moana Surfrider Hotel and the Royal Hawaiian Hotel).
Waikiki Beach hosts many events, including surf competitions, outdoor performances, hula dancing, and outrigger canoe races.
In the early 20th century, Duke Kahanamoku became a well-known surfer in Waikiki. Throughout his life and after competing in the Olympics, many people around the world wanted to learn to surf. Duke’s influence made Waikiki beach a surfing hotspot. They also named my favorite spot on the island after him, Duke’s Waikiki
Following World War II, Waikiki beach restoration efforts have occurred every few years. The sand was imported to this artificial beach from the 1920s to the 1970s, once by boat and barge from Southern California. 1,730 feet of shoreline was replenished at a cost of $2.4 million following chronic erosion of more than a foot a year, no wonder why this beach is just perfect.
What’s so great about Waikiki Beach
I’m going to try to put in words what’s so great about Waikiki Beach, knowing that unless you experience this for yourself my words won’t reach the level of excitement I get just remembering back how amazing Waikiki Beach is.
This pristine stretch of white soft as cloud sand, that meet this turquoise blue warm water can’t be described by words, though I’m trying.
The energy, the air, the sand, the water… all it’s element make this place the most amazing and perfect place on earth for me.
I’m not sure what the energetic level of Waikiki or Hawaii is, but it must be super hi because when I’m there and I meditate or ask for things my manifestations are almost instantaneously.
It’s like if my connection with the universe is stronger when I’m there.
Now, knowing what I know it could just be that since I’m so deep in appreciation of such beautiful place, my alignment is instant or it could be that there is some better universal alignment on the island.
Amenities in Waikiki Beach
Waikiki Beach has all the amenities you need to make your vacation amazingly perfect. These amenities range from the following: Bathrooms, Restaurants, Bars, Adventures, Comfort, and Retail stores.
Depending on where you decide to spend your day or entire holiday on Waikiki Beach your options for amenities will be more or less than the ones listed above.
For example, if you hang out passed the Moana Surf Rider Hotel towards diamond head, your amenities will be limited to Bathrooms and few other comfort amenities like umbrellas; however if you are hanging out between the Moana Surf Rider and the Royal Hawaiian Hotel, opposite direction, then you can count on having all the amenities that you can dream of on your beach adventure, because the hotels provide you with many of them.
I get that crowds are not for everyone and that’s the beauty of Waikiki Beach and Hawaii…. Different spots on the same beach can have different amounts of people and be better for a different type of personalities.
I personally don’t mind or care about if there is or not people around me. So, the rest of the amenities play a larger role in my decision making.
However, I do understand for the introverts out there that crowds can be an issue and that’s why I’m mentioning this.
Safety in and around Waikiki Beach
Waikiki Beach is very safe.
As a tourist, you should always be aware of your surroundings and given the times we are living in, you definitely should be careful where you leave your things.
I’m always careful and aware.
I also always trust my intuition and my gut feeling about people and places.
But with that said I have to say and I hope it never changes, Waikiki Beach is an amazingly safe place.
We’ve been in the water gazillion times leaving our belongings on the beach and not once we’ve had a problem.
With that said I’m always prepared.
What I mean for that is that I never have all my money or all my credit cards in my bag at any time when I’m traveling.
Also, I have pictures of the front of my cards and back so I can contact the credit card company if I need to while on vacation, that way if something happens the worst scenario is nothing far from the inconvenience of not having the card with me.
Going back to the safety aspect, even though Waikiki beach is a home for homeless people at night, they get cleared out pretty early in the morning.
I usually get to the beach by 8 am so I can get my first-row umbrella and by that time, most homeless people are gone.
Where to rent umbrellas on Waikiki Beach
This is a super tip that I want to share with you. There are few places where you can rent your umbrella on Waikiki Beach, but I like to go to Aloha Beach Services or ABS.
This is a little hole in the wall between Duke’s Waikiki and the Moana Surfrider Hotel.
The prices are the best on Waikiki and located in the best real estate portion of this paradise. A downside is that they only accept cash and reservations are not accepted, therefore you need to come earlier so you can enjoy a front row beach with umbrella and chairs.
They also rent surfboards, teach surfing lessons, rent the banana boat, and floaters.
You should budget $USD50 for a whole day on the beach, from 8 am to 4 pm and trust me that when the sun gets hot or even if it rains, this is totally worth your investment.
We do this on every trip and keep coming back always.
Waikiki, oh Waikiki!
Nothing can go wrong for you when you visit Waikiki.
If you like the ocean, the sun, relaxation or adventure, (you can have them all) good food and drinks, then you need to allow yourself to experience this amazing destination, and paradise.
Waikiki Beach is all you thought it will be and more.
Not for nothing, it’s my magical place.
But regardless, I want you to remember to travel more and travel often; because life is a Getaway.
