My Amazing Indoor Skydiving Experience

My son and I went for a weekend getaway to Hollywood Universal Studios last weekend to celebrate his 12th birthday.  The reason we decided to go there, was because he wanted to have an indoor skydiving experience and we were able to get that and so much more here.

I did a lot of research about such adventure, and where is the best place to do it safely.  In this post, I’ll share with you our amazing indoor skydiving experience and my tips to you if you decide to do it too.

Where to have an indoor skydiving experience

I’m not sure what all the places are where you can do this but based on my experience the best place to have an indoor skydiving experience is at iFly.

This franchise has locations all over the country and different packages tailored to every budget.

We decided to go to Los Angeles and have our adventure at iFly in Universal City Walk because since we were flying specifically to try indoor skydiving, I also wanted to make it a memorable weekend getaway with my son, and so I was looking at the overall experience.

I’m not getting any commissions from iFly, but since my indoor skydiving experience was amazing I definitely will recommend you to go there.

There are many locations all over the continental US, and so you should be able to find a location that you can drive to.

Preparing for your indoor skydiving experience

Leading to the actual indoor skydiving experience I was rather nervous and anxious because I didn’t know what to expect.

I’ve seen videos and what not, but I couldn’t find anything that explained to me exactly what was going to happen and so I think it’ll be good for me to give you a synopsis of what happens before during and after the indoor skydiving experience to ease your nerves and help you prepare.

I’ve prepared this short video with the things I’ve would have wanted to know before we went to iFly, but also have it here written for you if you prefer to read it.

When you get to the indoor skydiving place, you need to go to the check-in area to get all set for your class.  If you are interested in this part of the post is because this is your first-time indoor skydiving, and therefore yes, you will need a class.

Make sure you have signed the waivers before you get there to save time.  You can do that online.

Once you are all checked in, at the time of your class you will be paired with an instructor and other participants in your class.  We had 5 people in total, including me.

You first will be asked to watch a video that goes over the safety information that you need to know to ensure lots of fun.

This video also goes over the basic position that you need to hold to avoid sinking to the bottom of the tunnel or going super high and out of control.  Don’t worry, flying is not something we humans were meant to do, and so it’s not easy to gain height.  It actually takes effort and skills to do so.

After the video is over, which lasts about 5 minutes, the instructor will review the positions and the hand signals they will use to communicate with you.

Seems overwhelming, I know, but after your first try, you will be hooked!

Following the briefing, you will be taken to another room where you will get a suit, helmet, and goggles.

Your personal belongings can stay in a locker for the remainder of your experience.  This includes purses, packages, and all jewelry.

After the entire class is all suited up you will proceed to the tunnel with your instructor and that’s when the fun will begin.

The indoor skydiving experience

The actual experience begins now, and everyone in your class will have as many turns as you have paid for, and you have to wait for everyone to have their paid turns before your indoor skydiving experience is over.

There are many packages available, and shockingly you can buy more “flights” last minute when you are at the tunnel.

You can also upgrade any of your flights, but the first one, to a high flight for $10.

We had scheduled to do the following combinations of flights:

3 training flights and 1 high flight for me, and 2 training flights, 1 Virtual reality flight and 1 high flight for my son.  In the end, I did 1 training flight and 2 high flights, and my son loved it so much that end up doing the largest number of flights from the class for a total of 5.

After the indoor skydiving experience, you are taken to the changing room where you can see your pictures and videos as well as receive the certificate that allows you to skip the lesson flights and go straight to flying instead.

Other things you need to know to maximize your fun at your indoor skydiving experience

These are things that you must keep in mind to maximize your fun.  Some of them I learned the hard way.

  1. 1. Wear comfortable clothes and shoes that won’t come off
  2. 2. Leave all jewelry at home (including your wedding ring)
  3. 3. If you have long hair wear it in a braid

What’s next after your initial indoor skydiving experience?

If you are like me and my son, you probably will love indoor skydiving.  If that’s the case, there is a flying school where you can get better with instructors leading you along the different positions and tricks.

You can always just keep coming back to do a flight or two at a time and get better on your own slowly.

I will definitely try it again when I go to a city that has indoor skydiving.  Here is the list to facilitate your planning:
